The Newcomer’s Club was originally organized by a local woman who went to the various businesses and offered to introduce them and their products to new people arriving in the community. The Times-Independent, for example, gave a six-month free subscription as part of the Welcome Package. There were also social events such as this dance held during the 1950’s, which were held to introduce Moab’s newest residents to one another and to the broader community.
Sam Taylor, born in 1933, wrote of the Newcomers Club in his oral history at the Moab Museum:
“Newcomer’s Club, uh huh. When a family moved to town, soon as they got settled, members of the Newcomers Club would visit them, welcome them here and give them give certificates from retail businesses all over town. Give them a list of the civic clubs, churches and things like that. Just trying to make them feel welcome.”
