Built in 1896 by F.B. Hammond, the Hammond and Sons Mercantile was among the first of the highly competitive general merchandise stores in the burgeoning town of Moab. Hammond was a rancher and a banker and his sons went on to become some of early Moab’s movers and shakers. At one point, the store was totally rebuilt except for the exterior walls after a fire gutted the interior of the building. Later moving across the street, the large brick building which originally housed the new mercantile later became the Moab Co-Op, and eventually the Miller’s Co-Op. During this time, the Grand Hotel occupied the upper story. The building burned down and was never replaced.
