Moab’s beloved map: Behind the Scenes Conserving a 20 year labor of love

Join the Museum and professional conservator Kimberleigh Collins-Peynaud for a conversation about and demonstration of the preservation of an iconic piece of Moab’s history: the hand-carved balsa wood Urbanek map.

Join us for a conversation with the Moab Museum’s Curatorial & Collections Manager, Tara Beresh, and Kimberleigh Collins-Peynaud, Salt Lake City-based objects conservator who has been hard at work conserving the iconic hand-carved relief map that has long been displayed in Moab’s Museum. Traced from 7.5-minute topographic maps and meticulously hand-carved from balsa wood, this stunning piece has been called the creator John Urbanek’s “love letter to Moab.” After many years on display, the map required professional cleaning and care, and the Museum has invested in the expertise of Collins-Peynaud. Attendees will have the opportunity to see a behind-the-scenes demonstration of Collins-Peynaud undertaking work live in her studio, as well as learn more about what the Museum is doing to care for some of the community’s most beloved items.

This webinar will be held on Zoom and simulcast on Facebook Live on the Museum’s Facebook page. No pre-registration is required. This webinar is free and open to the general public. Click here to join.
